283 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the guidelines for eligibility for a higher education grant having regard to the case of a mature student commencing a post graduate course in primary teaching and who completed a degree and higher diploma in secondary education in 1998 without the help of a higher education grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Financial assistance is available to mature students in respect of postgraduate studies under the higher education grants scheme which is administered by the local authorities.
Graduates pursuing a post graduate course in primary teaching are eligible for maintenance and tuition fee grants under the scheme. However, I would point out to the Deputy that, under the terms of this scheme, grants are not payable to candidates who already hold a postgraduate qualification and are pursuing a second postgraduate qualification. There are no plans to revise the scheme in this regard.
