Vol. 515 No. 6

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Seán Haughey

Question:

283 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the guidelines for eligibility for a higher education grant having regard to the case of a mature student commencing a post graduate course in primary teaching and who completed a degree and higher diploma in secondary education in 1998 without the help of a higher education grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6646/00]

Financial assistance is available to mature students in respect of postgraduate studies under the higher education grants scheme which is administered by the local authorities.

Graduates pursuing a post graduate course in primary teaching are eligible for maintenance and tuition fee grants under the scheme. However, I would point out to the Deputy that, under the terms of this scheme, grants are not payable to candidates who already hold a postgraduate qualification and are pursuing a second postgraduate qualification. There are no plans to revise the scheme in this regard.
