Written Answers. - Coroners Service.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

35 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to update the Coroners Act, 1962, in view of the decisions and comments by the Supreme Court. [6803/00]

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

39 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the recent comments made by the Chief Justice regarding the failure of the Oireachtas to update the Coroners Act, 1962; when he will receive the report of the working group reviewing the Act; when he will bring proposals to Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6837/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 39 together.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to a parliamentary question on Tuesday, 29 February 2000, where I outlined that in December 1998 the Government approved my proposals to establish a working group to undertake a comprehensive review of the coroner service. Throughout 1999, the group has examined all aspects of the service, including the Coroners Act, 1962. Seventeen plenary meetings have been held and the group will shortly be concluding its deliberations. I expect to have its final report within the next few months.
I assure the Deputy that the report of the group will, on its receipt, be examined by Government as quickly as possible. When I have particular legislative proposals, I will bring them to the Government for approval and have them published in the normal way.
