Vol. 516 No. 1
107 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the receipts from speeding fines in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7189/00]
108 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the receipts from all road traffic fines in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7190/00]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 107 and 108 together.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that fines on the spot for speeding were only introduced in December 1996. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the income from fines on the spot for speeding is estimated to be as follows: 1997, £2.9 million; 1998, £5.4 million.
The value of fines on the spot issued for speeding in 1999 is £8.5 million, provisional.
I can inform the Deputy that all receipts from road traffic fines imposed by the courts are allocated to a general heading of Road Traffic Fines Receipts and that it is not possible to extract from these a breakdown of receipts for court fines for speeding. Details in relation to all road traffic fines imposed by the courts are set out in the tabular statement following:
Year |
Receipts from Fines Imposed by the Courts for Road Traffic Offences |
£ |
|
1999 (Provisional) |
6.2 Million |
1998 |
6.1 Million |
1997 |
5.5 Million |
1996 |
5.3 Million |
1995 |
5.6 Million |
109 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the cost of Garda manpower to enforce road traffic legislation in each of the past five years; the plans, if any, he has to establish a dedicated road traffic corps within the Garda; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7191/00]
The information required by the Deputy is not readily available and it would require a considerable amount of Garda time to compile an estimate of such information. There are 57 sergeants and 364 gardaí employed full-time on traffic law enforcement duties and, of course, each uniformed garda also has responsibility for traffic law enforcement.
The Deputy may be interested to know that a Garda traffic corps operates in each Garda division outside the DMR and that there is one traffic corps for the DMR as a whole and a traffic unit in each of the six divisions in the DMR.
