Vol. 516 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Nora Owen

Question:

112 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will approve a full-time remedial teacher for a school (details supplied) in County Dublin in view of the fact it has the services of a half-time teacher, which arrangement was granted approximately ten years ago; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8379/00]

In September 1999 the remedial teaching service was extended to cover all primary schools with a pupil-teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil teacher ratios were also advised that they could seek remedial support where they could demonstrate a need for such a service.

All available posts were utilised in the current school year to extend the service to those schools which previously had no remedial teacher service. The school to which the Deputy refers has a shared remedial teacher post.

However, I can assure the Deputy that I have noted the situation to which she refers and that the remedial needs of the school in question will be fully taken into account in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing remedial services.
