118 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if an application and full necessary documentation has been submitted for a person (details supplied) who is commencing school in September 2000 and needs a full-time care assistant to work with him in school; his views on whether a child with conditions like this needs full-time one to one care assistance; and when a decision on this application will be completed and communicated to family and school. Relevant particulars relating to the child in question have been forwarded to my Department's inspectorate with a view to establishing the precise needs of the child and arranging for the provision of any necessary support services.
A report is awaited from the inspectorate and I have asked that this report be completed as speedily as possible. I will advise the Deputy of the outcome.
119 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if additional examination time will be granted for a person (details supplied) in County Waterford whose disability will seriously affect her ability to perform in a normal manner in her junior certificate examination; and if special provision will be made to accommodate her needs as has been recommended by medical opinion. My Department makes arrangements for candidates with special needs to take the examinations in accordance with a set of general principles.
In the event that the school or parents are not satisfied with the arrangements proposed in an individual case, they have a right of appeal to the special arrangements appeals committee which is independent of my Department.
In relation to the application for special arrangements made on behalf of the person named by the Deputy, the position is that the school the candidate is attending has appealed the Department's decision to the independent special arrangements appeals committee.
