Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cycling Promotion.

Question:

236 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the steps, if any, her Department has taken to encourage members of staff to cycle to work; and if she will consider a cycling allowance to promote cycling. [8634/00]

My Department does not have a policy on cycling. That said, however, I am aware that a number of officers use bicycles as a means of getting to and from work and my Department has provided bicycle racks where possible for officers to park their bicycles.

I have no proposals to consider a cycling allow ance to promote cycling. In any event, as a general principle travelling expenses are not paid to staff for any portion of their journey to and from work irrespective of the mode of transport used.
