Vol. 517 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Ivor Callely

Question:

80 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise further to Parliamentary Question No. 78 of 3 November 1999, when the ten new DART carriages will be put into service; the extra capacity these carriages will give; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7759/00]

In my reply to Question No. 44 on 15 February 2000, I stated that two vehicles had been delivered and it was expected that the remaining eight carriages would be delivered by mid-March.

However, arising from the testing of the first two carriages, Iarnród Éireann advises me that it has sought technical adjustments in the remaining vehicles. As a result Iarnród Éireann now estimates that final delivery of the carriages is likely to be in early summer 2000.

These carriages will increase the DART fleet from 80 to 90 and will provide additional capacity of approximately 2,000 places. A further 16 carriages are also on order.
