Vol. 517 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mobile Telephone Radiation.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

95 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the proposals, if any, she has to introduce legislation in regard to radiation levels emitted from mobile telephone handsets or transmission masts (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8730/00]

There is a requirement that licensed operators comply with the general public exposure limits published by the International Commission on Non-ionising Radiation Protection in 1998. This requirement is part of the licence conditions issued by the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation.

The ODTR has conducted and intends to conduct further audits of mobile radio installations to ensure compliance with the guidelines. The first two audits, compliance with emission limits for non-ionising radiation, ODTR 98/23 and 00/06, are available from the ODTR. I have no plans to introduce further legislation on the matter at this time. I have no function in relation to radiation levels emitted from mobile telephone handsets.
