Vol. 517 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

416 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science whether home tuition will be given to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare who has been diagnosed as suffering from attention deficit hyperactive disorder; the arrangements he will make in order that this student can sit his leaving certificate examination with a reasonable chance of competing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10598/00]

Where the pupil who has been identified as having special needs is capable of attending school full time, the recommended practice is to provide this support within the school environment. The scheme for home tuition which is operated by my Department is confined, generally, to pupils whose rate of attendance at school is less than 75%.

In the case of the pupil to whom the Deputy refers, my Department received a request in late January from the principal of his school seeking assistance to provide him with additional tuition in key areas on a one-to-one basis. Having examined the request in detail, and having obtained the observations of the national educational psychological service, my Department has made an additional allocation of teaching resources to the school amounting to three hours per week for the balance of this school year.

My Department has received no application in respect of special arrangements required for this pupil to sit at this year's examinations.
