Vol. 518 No. 1

Written Answers. - FÁS Training Services.

Ulick Burke

Question:

98 Mr. U. Burke asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will provide funding for the establishment of a FÁS training centre for young apprentices in the main traders areas at Portumna, County Galway, where a suitable vacant building exists for such a facility and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11043/00]

FÁS is, at present, expanding apprenticeship places to cope with current demand for off-the-job training. FÁS has stated that there is no exceptional demand for apprentice places in the catchment area of Portumna, and because the management, supervision and support of an apprentice operation at a distance from existing training centres would involve significantly increased overhead costs, FÁS does not envisage the establishment of a training centre for young apprentices in Portumna at present.
