Vol. 518 No. 2

Written Answers. - Community Law Centres.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

35 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the basis on which community law centres are funded; the criteria applied; if his attention has been drawn to a campaign to establish a law centre in Ballymun, Dublin 11; his views on this proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11132/00]

As the Deputy will be aware I provide grant-in-aid for the Legal Aid Board which is responsible for 30 law centres around the country. My Department also provides grant-in-aid for free legal advice centres. My Department does not provide funding for community law centres.

I have been informed by the Legal Aid Board that it has agreed to liaise with the group proposing the establishment of a community law centre in Ballymun. The board will also support the work of the community law centre within the scope and terms of the provisions of the Civil Legal Aid Act, 1995, by taking appropriate cases referred to it by the community law centre.
