Vol. 518 No. 2

Written Answers. - Suicide Incidence.

Dan Neville

Question:

89 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the number, by gender, of people who died by suicide in 1999. [11280/00]

Data on mortality are routinely published in the annual and quarterly reports on vital statistics compiled by the Central Statistics Office. The most recent figures available refer to the third quarter of 1999 and show that there were 241 male deaths and 54 female deaths from suicide. These figures are provisional as they refer to deaths registered during January to September 1999 rather than deaths which actually occurred during that period.
