Vol. 518 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dog Fouling.

Noel Ahern

Question:

202 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if local authorities with large urban areas have given feedback on the law regarding littering of footpaths by dogs and the difficulty of getting neighbours to formally give evidence; if the legislation is under review; and if he will make a statement on the matter and outline his intentions. [12066/00]

While I am not aware of the difficulties mentioned by the Deputy, I expect that litter surveys this year to be undertaken by local authorities under the national litter pollution monitoring system will quantify the scale of the problem of dog fouling.

The national anti-litter forum, which was established last July, is reviewing a wide range of issues associated with litter pollution, including the legislative framework in this area, and is due to report shortly with proposals for additional anti-litter measures. The forum recommendations, including any relating to legislation, will be given detailed consideration in my Department.
