Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Water Safety.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

378 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of water safety, life saving, lifeguard and resuscitation awards made by the Irish Water Safety Association for each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12591/00]

Information in relation to certificates awarded for swimming and water safety qualifications generally is set out in the annual reports of the National Safety Council, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

The Irish Water Safety Association – IWSA – was established on 26 November 1999. Article 9 of the Irish Water Safety Association (Establishment) Order, 1999, requires the association, in the first six months of each year, to make a report to the Minister on its activities in the preceding year. For the future, I expect that the annual reports of the IWSA will set out the information in relation to water safety certificates previously included in the annual reports of the National Safety Council.
