Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - Foreign Conflicts.

Jim Higgins

Question:

48 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the EU General Affairs Council recently considered relations between China and Taiwan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12832/00]

The EU supports the principle of One China and has repeatedly underlined the necessity of resolving the question of Taiwan peacefully through constructive dialogue. The potential seriousness of the situation, with regional and wider repercussions, should either party not follow this course is only too evident and it is for this reason that the matter is kept under close observation by the EU.

Both sides for their part are fully aware of the EU position that they should avoid taking steps or making statements which would increase tension. This concern has also been made known to the authorities in Beijing by the Government through diplomatic contacts, and the importance of reaching a peaceful solution through dialogue has been stressed.
