Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - Claim Against German Government.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

58 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if a response has been received to the communication sent to the German Government in December 1999 on behalf of the family of the former master and owner of the mv Loch Ryan which was bombed by aircraft of the German Air Force on 16 August 1940; and the current status of this claim for compensation against the German Government arising from damage caused during the Second World War. [13055/00]

Following on from the Deputy's previous question of 2 December 1999 on the mv Loch Ryan, officials in my Department instituted a comprehensive review of this case and an official posted to the Irish Embassy in Berlin has been in communication with the German authorities about the matter. When a response has been obtained from the German authorities, my officials will be in contact with the representative of the family of the late master and owner of the mv Loch Ryan to inform them of developments.
