Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - Passport Applications.

Willie Penrose

Question:

100 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the position in relation to a person, who is Australian by birth and whose grandparents hail from Northern Ireland, who wishes to obtain a right to travel to Ireland; if an appli cation for a passport by this person will be considered based upon the foregoing relationship; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13170/00]

An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport may enter the State without a visa and remain here as a visitor for up to three months. Only Irish citizens may hold Irish passports.

If at least one of the relevant great-grandparents was born in the island of Ireland, the Australian-born grandchild of a person born in Northern Ireland may acquire Irish citizenship by having his or her birth registered in the foreign births entry book at an Irish Embassy or Consulate in his or her country of residence.

An Australian citizen should check whether, in Australian law, such an application for Irish citizenship may jeopardise his or her Australian citizenship.
