Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Bernard Allen

Question:

213 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to carry out a complete review of the GMS contract; and if he has arranged discussions with the Irish Medical Organisation in this regard. [13589/00]

The chief executive officers of the health boards are currently carrying out a wideranging review of the role of general practice in primary care, which will include, inter alia, consideration of the nature of the existing GMS scheme contract.

I understand that the Irish Medical Organisation and the Irish College of General Practitioners are also, at present, jointly preparing their own vision statement on the future development of general practice. It will of course be necessary and useful to discuss this very important strategic matter with both bodies following completion of the review processes now under way by all the above-mentioned parties.
