Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - Community Development.

Richard Bruton

Question:

258 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the sup port approved for a resource centre (details supplied) in Dublin 5; when a facilitator will be appointed; the activities to be undertaken by the facilitator; and the timescale for them. [13474/00]

In 1998 my Department engaged in discussions with the Northside Partnership on the possibility of the Department supporting a number of community groups in the partnership area under the Department's community development support programmes – community development programme, family and community services resource centre programme, programme of core-funding to locally-based community and family support groups.

From these discussions my Department agreed in principle to support a number of projects in the partnership area, including a project in the area in which the group referred to in the Deputy's question is based, subject to the satisfactory negotiation of a contract with a suitable locally based community group in the area. An application was subsequently received from the group referred to in the Deputy's question and officers of my Department met the group in September 1999 to discuss its application, following which it was approved in principle for inclusion in the family and community services resource centre programme.

My Department has a number of regional support agencies which provide support for projects funded under the community development support programmes. Such assistance includes training for management committees, support for management in their role as employers, assistance in drawing up work plans, etc. The group was advised that such a support agency would be appointed to assist it in developing the necessary structures, etc. required for participation in the programmes.

The Department will be in touch with the group shortly to advise it of which support agency has been appointed to assist and provide support for it. Once appointed the support agency will work with the group to establish the necessary structures, etc. required for participation in my Department's programmes.
