Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Michael Ring

Question:

257 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be approved free telephone rental allowance, free fuel allowance, free electricity and TV licence and the living alone allowance. [13248/00]

The person concerned applied for old age, non-contributory, pension but it has been decided that he is not entitled to this pension as his means, mainly derived from a British retirement pension, are in excess of the statutory income limit. He has been notified of this decision and of his right of appeal. He applied for a living alone allowance at the same time but he is not entitled to this allowance as he is not in receipt of an Irish social welfare pension. He applied for a free telephone rental allowance and a free electricity allowance-television licence on 31 March 2000 and has been awarded a free telephone rental allowance from that date. He has been awarded a free electricity allowance with effect from 1 May 2000, the commencement of his next ESB billing period following the date of his application. He is entitled to a free television licence from his next licence renewal date. He is also entitled to a fuel allowance from 24 March 2000, payable at the rate of £5 per week for the duration of the heating season. A cheque will be issued to him shortly in respect of fuel allowance due for the three week period from 24 March to 14 April 2000 when the 1999-2000 heating season ended. A fuel allowance book will be issued to him in advance of the start of the next heating season in mid-October 2000.
