Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - Supermarket Licensing.

Donal Carey

Question:

282 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received representations regarding the status of independent supermarkets in the new licensing legislation; and if he will make a statement with regard to his views to their continuing in this business having regard to correspondence (details supplied). [13314/00]

I can confirm that I have received representations along the lines referred to by the Deputy regarding the position of independent supermarkets and the licensing laws.

Government policy regarding changes in intoxicating liquor law is as contained in the Intoxicating Liquor Bill, 2000. The Bill is wide-ranging in scope and offers fundamental changes in a number of areas relating to supermarkets. I look forward to debate on the details of the Bill in the House when it has been passed by the Seanad where it was initiated.

I should add that the Government, as already indicated to the House by way of reply to previous questions, has agreed in principle to the establishment of a commission on licensing. Included in the commission's remit will be to review the scope for a system of additional licences and to examine other aspects of the licensing system. The details of the terms of reference of the commission will be a matter for final determination in the light of discussion with relevant interests. The composition of the commission that I envisage will be broadly based, and I expect to be in a position to announce further details in the near future.
