Vol. 519 No. 2

Written Answers. - Millennium Recognition Awards.

Michael Ring

Question:

81 Mr. Ring asked the Taoiseach the reason a group (details supplied) in County Mayo was not successful in getting a millennium recognition award; if he will give details of the projects who were successful in getting these awards; the amount allocated for each case; and the number of the total applications which were unsuccessful. [13316/00]

The National Millennium Committee's remit is to make recommendations to the Government on proposed millennium projects of national significance and to ensure that communities, particularly in areas of social disadvantage, could participate fully in marking the millennium.

In recognition of the economic, social and cultural contribution made by community groups, the millennium committee allocated £3 million of millennium funding under the millennium recognition awards. These awards, which were specifically for locally based projects, were administered by Area Development Management Limited on behalf of the National Millennium Committee.

There was a very large response to the awards with a total of more than 1,400 applications received from which nearly 200 projects were recommended by the millennium committee. With such a large number of applications and a limited fund available, a large proportion of proposals could not be supported. Unfortunately, the application from the group referred to by the Deputy was not successful.

The detailed information sought by the Deputy is set out in the following schedule.
