Vol. 519 No. 3

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Tony Gregory

Question:

216 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will withdraw any proposal to reduce the teaching staff at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 3, in view of the large class sizes at present and the disadvantaged background of the children. [13772/00]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by reference to the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule, which is drawn up each year following discussions with the managerial authorities and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation.

The enrolment in the school referred to on 30 September 1999 was 234 pupils. The number of pupils required to retain the ninth mainstream class teacher for the 2000-01 school year is 240.

Accordingly, I regret that the school will lose the ninth mainstream class teacher at the end of the current school year.

The school continues to have the services of a concessionary post in recognition of its disadvantaged status. It also has one remedial teaching post and a shared home school liaison post.
