Vol. 519 No. 3

Written Answers - Vehicle Registration Tax.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

158 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the position of a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan who works in Northern Ireland in relation to the use of his northern registered car; if he will examine the issues raised by this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13903/00]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the person referred to by the Deputy is resident in County Monaghan but works in Northern Ireland. As a resident of the State, the person concerned is not eligible for temporary exemption from the registration requirement and, accordingly, may only use in the State a motor car which has been registered in the State.

This matter has been the subject of protracted correspondence between the person concerned and the Revenue Commissioners. I do not propose to get involved in the vehicle registration process as that is a matter entirely for the Revenue Commissioners. I have been informed by the Commissioners that the case was the subject of an appeal to the Appeal Commissioners by the person in February 1999, when a refusal to grant the concession sought was upheld.
I understand that the matter is currently the subject of a complaint to the Ombudsman.
