Written Answers. - Hospital Appointments.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

168 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health and Children when a second rheumatologist will be appointed to Waterford Regional Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14697/00]

Phil Hogan

Question:

180 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will sanction an additional rheumatologist for the population of Carlow-Kilkenny community care area in view of the fact that only one rheumatologist is dealing with patient services in the south east region at present and in view of the escalating waiting times of patients of up to two years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14104/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 168 and 180 together.

A consultant rheumatologist was appointed by the South Eastern Health Board and took up duty on 1 February 1997. The further development of rheumatology services will be considered as part of the ongoing development of services in the south east in the context of the board's overall priorities and available funding.
