Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Denis Naughten

Question:

229 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the investigation, if any, which has taken place into the conduct of two driving testers in light of the fact that 25% of all complaints received by the Department (as stated in the Comptroller and Auditor Generals report) related to these two testers; the conclusions drawn from any such investigation; the actions, if any, taken by him; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14066/00]

The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the driver testing service, which has been presented to Dáil Éireann, records that during the period 1995 to 1998 a total of 150 complaints were received in relation to driving tests, amounting to 0.04% of tests carried out.

All customer complaints to my Department are investigated and brought to the notice of staff who may be the subject of them. Further action, including if necessary disciplinary action, is taken as appropriate. No formal disciplinary proceedings were considered to be warranted in respect of the matters referred to in the question. The pattern of complaints commented upon in the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General has not been instanced subsequent to 1998.
