Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Tony Gregory

Question:

323 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science if the request for physics hours starting in September 2000, made by a school (details supplied) in Dublin 7 has been granted by his Department. [14126/00]

Applications from individual school authorities for additional teaching resources to cater for curricular needs within the school are considered in the context of available resources and having regard to existing provision. The Deputy will be aware that I recently announced a reduction in the pupil teacher ratio for appointment purposes at second level from 19:1 to 18:1. Arising from this, the school in question has been allocated additional teaching resources for the next school year. The school's application for an additional allocation to cater for physics is being considered and a decision will be conveyed to the school authorities as soon as possible.

Question:

324 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science the current position with regard to the request for a special needs resource teacher for a school (details supplied) in Dublin 3 as recommended by the psychological service in September 1999. [14127/00]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that 7.5 hours resource teaching support and ten hours special needs assistant support per week is being made available to the school in question to cater for the needs of three pupils attending the school. The school authorities will be formally advised of this allocation in the coming days.
