Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teaching Services.

John Perry

Question:

342 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make arrangements for additional hours of remedial teaching to be made available to a person (details supplied) in County Sligo as he needs it before he starts secondary school and taking into consideration the assessment report which was recently submitted to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14357/00]

I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate this matter.

In September 1999 the remedial teaching service was extended to all primary schools with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil teacher ratios were advised that they could seek remedial support where they could demonstrate a need for such a service. All available posts were utilised in the current school year to ensure that no primary school in the country should be without a remedial teaching service.

However, I can assure the Deputy that the remedial needs of the school mentioned by the Deputy will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing remedial services.
