Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tax Investigations.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

87 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance the progress being made by the Revenue Commissioners to investigate the tax affairs of 120 individuals linked to the Ansbacher deposits; when it is expected that the investigation will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14263/00]

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the investigation into the tax compliance position of the individuals named in the report of the authorised officer on the examination of the books and documents of Ansbacher (Cayman) Limited began in October last.

There have been communications with various parties involved in the matter. The investigations, which cover events from the 1970s onwards, are time consuming and detailed. In addition to the individuals named, associated persons and trusts are also the subject of investigation. In the course of the investigations, Revenue officers are using, where appropriate, all available powers including new powers included in the 1999 Finance Act.

I am informed that Revenue expects that the investigations will continue for some time and that it is not possible at this stage to make any reliable estimation as to when they will be completed.
