Vol. 520 No. 1

Written Answers. - Spinal Cord Injuries.

Bernard Allen

Question:

208 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of spinal cord injuries each year from 1990 to date in the year 2000. [15120/00]

Data on the number of admissions to hospital with a diagnosis of spinal cord injury are provided in the following table for the years 1994 to 1998. The figures have been taken from the hospital in-patient inquiry system which records information on hospitalisations in all publicly funded acute hospitals. Prior to 1994 the system was not sufficiently comprehensive to report national totals reliably. Data for 1999 are not yet complete. The figures provided include day cases and in-patients. It should be noted that if patients are admitted more than once in a given year or are transferred from one hospital to another, each admission is recorded separately in HIPE.
