Vol. 520 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fire Stations.

Question:

250 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received an application from Dublin Corporation for a second fire appliance for the Tallaght fire station, Belgard Road, Dublin 24, in view of the increasing demands on the fire service; if he has satisfied himself with the level of capital and current funding for the Dublin fire service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14872/00]

The provision and financing of a fire service, including the provision of fire fighting appliances and their deployment among fire brigades, is the responsibility of the local fire authorities, in this case Dublin Corporation. There is no proposal from the corporation for a second fire appliance for the Tallaght fire station before my Department.

My Department provides capital grants towards certain expenditure incurred by the authorities in the provision of a fire service. In the period 1997 to 1999, fire authorities were given approval to invite tenders for 44 new fire appliances. Five of these were for the Dublin fire brigade and to date three have been delivered. It is understood from Dublin Corporation that the remaining two have been ordered and it is expected that they will be delivered later this year.

Details of additional grants to finance further new fire appliances will be notified to fire authorities in the near future.
