Vol. 520 No. 3

Written Answers. - Armed Crime.

Denis Naughten

Question:

33 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of armed robberies up to 28 May 2000; the number of similar robberies for the equivalent period in each of the years 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15525/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the combined total for armed crime, the number of robberies with firearms and the number of aggravated burglaries with firearms for the first four months of 1996, 1997 and 1998 were 214, 102 and 96, respectively.

Statistics for 1999 have not yet been published, but I am informed that the provisional figure is 115. The provisional figure up to the end of April 2000 is 111. I should stress that these figures are provisional, and are liable to change.
