Vol. 520 No. 3

Written Answers. - Video Technology Links.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

36 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to introduce audio video links between prisons and courtrooms to deal with remand and bail applications; if he will consider such a move to improve efficiency of the system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13373/00]

With my encouragement and approval, a full review of the possibilities of using advanced video technology links between courtroom settings and prisons is currently under way. The process of consultations is ongoing and a multi-disciplinary working group has been set up to progress this matter, chaired by an official of the Courts Service involving all interested groups. The Chief State Solicitor's office, the Law Society and the Bar Council are being fully consulted and kept involved in the consultation process. Given that the main benefit of the use of such technology would be in reducing prison service costs, lead financial responsibility for the installation of such systems, if approved, would fall on the Prison Service.

I anticipate a report in this matter being put before me early next year and possibly sooner.
