Vol. 520 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prisons Service.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

57 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the circumstances under which alcoholic beverages are allowed within the confines of prisons. [13374/00]

I am informed by the director general of the Irish Prisons Service that alcoholic beverages are prohibited within the confines of prisons under rule 23 of the rules for the Government of prisons, 1947, except under a written order from the medical officer.

The brewing of home-made alcohol or ‘hooch' is a feature of prisons worldwide and has been found from time to time in Irish prisons.
