Vol. 520 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

61 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to arrange a review of the telephone system in Clontarf Garda station; if he will have additional telephone lines put in place for all incoming calls to be accommodated in view of the fact the existing telephone system seems to be inadequate; if a pilot scheme of a totally new system will be considered; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15413/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the telephone system in use in Clontarf Garda Station is a new system installed last year under the Garda Dublin metropolitan region network, DMRnet, project. The aims of the project are: to ensure the most effective interface between the Garda and the public; to provide the most efficient communication service between the Gardaí themselves, and to provide for the development of new communications services for the Garda.

I understand that a problem arose on 18 May, affecting incoming calls to some of the extensions in the station. This did not affect 999 calls but did affect calls to the published telephone number in the public office. This problem was rectified within 24 hours.

Finally, I should point out that this project is nearing completion with 44 out of 53 Garda sites in the region now fully networked.
