Vol. 520 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

John Browne

Question:

69 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will have considerations made into introducing a classroom assistant by September 2000 for single, junior infant classes where all of the children are in need of constant supervision until they get used to school. [16175/00]

Classroom assistants, or special needs assistants as they are now known, are provided by my Department where appropriate to help pupils with special needs.

There are no plans at present to extend this provision to junior infants classes generally as suggested by the Deputy.
