290 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans for the Ballymun comprehensive schools, Dublin 11; the rationale for these proposals; the building works required; the timescale for these and for the full implementation of the proposals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The question of amalgamating the three comprehensive schools in Ballymun has been the subject of discussion between the board of management of the schools and my Department on a number of occasions over the last decade. The most recent proposal in that regard came from the board last year, following consultation with the trustees and with staff.
The point had been reached where the three schools, which were designed to accommodate in excess of 2,000 students, had a combined enrolment of less than 800. This development necessitated that serious consideration be given to rationalisation and the more efficient use of all the accommodation for educational purposes.
It is now envisaged that the schools will amalgamate into the junior schools complex, which can accommodate approximately 1,500 students. In order for the junior comprehensive to accommodate the senior and junior cycles some refurbishment work and possibly some expansion is required.
A schedule of accommodation has been drawn up and is currently being finalised. A design team has been appointed to prepare a report on the feasibility of accommodating the students from the three schools in the junior comprehensive building. This report has recently been received by the Department and is currently being examined.
It is intended that the senior school building will be retained for educational purposes, and my officials will submit proposals to me in that regard in due course.
