Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Multinational Chain Stores.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

113 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has satisfied herself that all multinational chain stores operating here are doing so with due regard to EU legislation, with particular reference to competition; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16740/00]

I have no information which would suggest that multinational chain stores are breaching EU competition law.

The Competition Acts, 1991 and 1996, govern competition law in the State. Any allegations of anti-competitive behaviour in any sector of the economy should be brought to the attention of the Director of Competition Enforcement at the Competition Authority.

Allegations of breaches of EU competition law should be made to the Directorate General for Competition at the European Commission, Brussels, which has the responsibility for investigating such allegations.
