Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Jack Wall

Question:

294 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide funding for travel expenses to families who have to travel for proper training facilities for children with language disorders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17261/00]

Under present arrangements, my Department operates a school transport scheme for pupils with special education needs attending special schools and special classes in primary schools, including pupils attending special classes for specific speech and language disorder.

My Department has no involvement with training facilities for children with language disorders. The provision of speech therapy services is a matter for the relevant health authorities at present.

If the Deputy has a concern about transport arrangements to a particular special school or special class, I would be glad to have my officials investigate the matter on receipt of the relevant information.
