Question:

195 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Finance if he will give favourable consideration to County Cavan as a centre for decentralisation in view of the importance of decentralisation to the promotion of regional development and the urgent need to bring further economic development to the Border region; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18445/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 192 to 195, inclusive, together.

Given that I am still engaged in a process of consultation with my Government colleagues before presenting proposals to Government with a view to decisions being taken on the new programme of decentralisation by the end of next month, I am not in a position to comment on the likelihood of any centre or region featuring in the forthcoming programme, other than to say that I am aware of the very many cases for inclusion in the programme, all of which will be fully considered before decisions are taken.
