Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Legislative Programme.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

196 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the instructions or terms of reference or submissions made by him or his Department to the review group currently studying the Disabled Persons/Disabled Drivers (Tax Concessions) Regulations 1994; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18446/00]

As I have informed the House on a number of occasions, the review group is chaired by an official from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. I did not issue instructions to the group as to how it should proceed with its work. Prior to the setting up of the group, I, along with my colleague, the then Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Cowen, together with officials from both our Departments met with the Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy Mary Wallace and her officials to discuss the scheme. We agreed that a review of the scheme should be conducted by officials of the three Departments and of the Revenue Commissioners, who operate the scheme on a day to day basis. No submissions have been made to the group by my Department but officials in the Department are members of the group.
