Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

198 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the consideration he has given to the measures for a landfill tax to make more viable the enterprises which can re-use, recycle and thus reduce the wastage created as a result of the increased economic growth. [18448/00]

The possibility of introducing some form of landfill tax or levy has been examined by the environmental taxation group, which is chaired by my Department, who considered that there were good reasons to introduce a measure of this type.

However, a formal Government decision has not been taken to introduce any form of landfill tax or levy at present. This issue is likely to be considered as part of the group's deliberations for the 2001 budget preparations.
