Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cancer Rates.

John Gormley

Question:

281 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on whether cancer rates are increasing dramatically because of deterioration in our air, water and food; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18439/00]

I am advised that there has been no dramatic increase in cancer rates attributable to the particular environmental factors referred to by the Deputy.

Tobacco consumption is a significant factor in mortality and morbidity from cancer and in almost 90% of the 1,500 deaths from lung cancer each year smoking is a major causative factor. Tobacco consumption also increases the risk of other cancers such as those of the mouth and throat.
