Question:

419 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the number of appointments made to boards, semi-State and private, under the aegis of the Minister in each of the years 1997 to 2000; if he will give the number and percentage of males and females appointed to each board; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Since taking office in July 1997, I have made a total of 35 board appointments, 12 female and 23 male, as follows:

To Bord Fáilte

There is one vacancy on the board at present which is in the process of being filled.

To CERT

The term of office of the Council of CERT, with the exception of the Chairperson, expires on 4 August 2000.

To The Irish Sports Council

The Irish Sports Council was established on 1 July 1999. Following a resignation from the board on 21 September 1999, an appointment was made on 18 February 2000.

The current membership of these boards is as follows:

I have also made appointments to the Operational Programme for Tourism Management boards over the same period as follows: Marketing Management Board: In 1997 two appointments were made (both male), maintaining the ratio at 67:33, male to female; Product Development Board – Shannon Development Area: In 1997 there were three appointments made: the first (male) maintaining the ratio at 83:17, male to female; the second (female) changing the ratio to 67:33: and the third appointment (male) restoring the original ratio of 83:17; Product Development Board – Bord Fáilte Area: In 1997 one appointment was made, throughout 1998 one appointment was made and in 1999 there were two further appointments made. All these appointments were male and the ratio remained constant throughout the period at 100:0, male to female.
