Vol. 522 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Security.

Noel Ahern

Question:

240 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the problems being caused to residents in Glasnevin, Dublin 11, from anti-social behaviour by youths operating from the grounds of Beneavin De La Salle College; if this second level school has sought financial help towards a solution; if he will itemise their plan; the estimated cost; when approval will be given; and if there is the prospect of bringing forward an early solution to this ongoing problem. [18727/00]

Beneavin De La Salle College, Finglas, was included in the Finglas security project. As a result of its inclusion in this project, security lighting and security fencing have been provided at the school.

At a recent meeting involving the school's management authority and officials of my Department, concerns regarding security matters to the rear of the school were discussed. My Department responded to these concerns by immediately approving the employment of a consultant architect to report on the general position and to submit details of the works necessary to make the area secure. This report is awaited.
