Vol. 522 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Noel Ahern

Question:

241 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if, having regard to numerous requests for information on the proposal from Sacred Heart boys national school, Ballygall, Dublin 11, for various improvement works including the resurfacing of the school yard, he will outline the current position of the application; when the report was received from the Office of Public Works, if he will outline the actions and progress since; and when this work will be approved and finished. [18728/00]

My Department has received an application from the board of management of Sacred Heart boys national school for grant-aid towards various improvement works, including resurfacing of the school yard.

I assure the Deputy that the application is being processed as quickly as possible having regard to the large number of projects on hand within my Department.

Question:

242 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give an update on the proposal to erect a security fence around a school (details supplied) in Dublin 11; if work will be undertaken during the summer break; if the contract has been awarded; if he will give details regarding the query on the exact location of fence; the way in which there can be such a mapping dispute in view of the fact the school has existed for the past 40 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18729/00]

The management authority of the school in question has applied to my Department for grant-aid towards a security fence. It would appear, however, from documentation available that part of the area on which the fence is to be erected is not vested in my Department. Grant-aid is not available for works outside the vested area of the school.

My Department is seeking legal advice on the matter and I assure the Deputy that the matter will be progressed as quickly as possible.
