Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

186 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the need for increased funding towards regional and county roads for 2000 in light of increased tax receipts especially from the sale of new cars; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19024/00]

Funding for non-national roads has increased significantly in recent years from £174.8 million in 1997 to £263.74 million in 2000 – an increase of 51%.

I am satisfied that this increased level of central funding which is mainly from the local Government fund motor tax receipts, supplemented by local authorities' own resources, is providing for the ongoing and special needs of local authorities in relation to the non-national road network and for the systematic and accelerated improvement of this network.
