Vol. 522 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with four different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic, I received notice from Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin and I call on him to state the matter.

I give notice that I seek leave to move a motion for the Adjournment of the Dáil today under Standing Order 31 on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, that is, the decision by FÁS not to renew contracts for community employment for 450 people working as caretakers, cleaners, classroom assistants and secretarial assistants in the schools sector in the north-east region, comprising Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Meath.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. In regard to the second topic, I received notice from Deputy Yates and I call on him to state the matter.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the urgent matter of the protective notice and threatened industrial job losses due to the cancellation of rail freight services and the curtailment of up to 50% of intercity and suburban rail passenger routes because of the ongoing industrial dispute with locomotive drivers and the need for an adequate response by the Government.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. In regard to the third topic, I received notice from Deputy Naughten and I call on him to state the matter.

I seek leave under Standing Order 31 to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to debate an issue of urgent public importance, namely, the announcement by the British Government to compensate vaccine damaged children who were vaccinated under State programmes and in light of the fact the same vaccines used in the UK were manufactured by companies which supply similar vaccines in Ireland and the urgent need for the Department of Health and Children and the Government to immediately introduce a similar scheme in Ireland to ensure confidence in State vaccination programmes.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. In regard to the fourth topic, I received notice from Deputy Joe Higgins and I call on him to state the matter.

(Dublin West): Under Standing Order 31, I seek leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to debate the following matter of urgent public importance, which is, the selective and systematic leaking of the report into the tragic shooting of John Carthy at Abbeylara while the family of John Carthy, the Dáil and the public are denied sight of the report and call on the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to secure the immediate publication of the report and call for it to be debated in the Dáil before the summer recess.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
