Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Sean Fleming

Question:

276 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the situation regarding the coverage of the remedial teaching service in the national school at Graiguecullen on the Laois/Carlow border; and if he will make a statement regarding the necess ity to provide a proper remedial teaching service in the school in view of the large number of pupils who attend this school. [19034/00]

Since September 1999 the remedial teaching service has been extended to all primary schools with a pupil-teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil-teacher ratios may also seek remedial support from my Department where the level of their particular need warrants such a service.

Schools which can demonstrate a need for such support will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing remedial services.

However, I can assure the Deputy that the remedial needs of the pupils in the school in question will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve the existing service.
