Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Roads Projects.

Monica Barnes

Question:

31 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when it is expected that work will begin on the Kildare motorway by-pass; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18564/00]

Under the Roads Act, 1993, the National Roads Authority has overall statutory responsibility for the planning and supervision of works for the construction and maintenance of national roads. Accordingly, questions related to the progress of individual national roads projects may be appropriately addressed to the NRA or the local road authority.

The European Commission has raised certain further issues with the Irish authorities regarding the environmental implications of the Kildare motorway by-pass, following the full response provided by the Irish authorities in December 1999. A reply to these Commission queries is about to issue, without prejudice to the advancement of the project by the agencies concerned.
